Easy Mother's Day Craft

I promise I'll get back to blogging soon.  I have a list of post ideas and I just need to take the time to sit down and work on them!  Does anyone know where I can get some extra time to do that?!

Anyway, I wanted to share a quick and easy Mother's Day craft idea.  My mom and mother-in-law love getting little "handmade" gifts from Carson so I knew I wanted to include Mason this time!  I had to do something easy since he's only 3 weeks so I decided on foot prints.  I based this off a picture I saw on Pinterest and made a few modifications.

For the foot prints I used 3 colors on Carson and then one on Mason.  Carson loves it and says "tickle!" the whole time.  Mason was not a fan of the cold paint....poor guy!

It's not perfect but it was made with love! :)

Nursery Inspiration

As some of you know, we've had our house on the market and recently went into contract (yay)!  I've been itching to start working on a nursery for Mason and/or a big boy room for Carson for months!  Since we aren't living in the house where we will bring Mason home, there isn't much I can physically do yet.  I really can't even buy much because it will just be more stuff that we need to move.

Thankfully Pinterest exists so I've been able to create an inspiration board with a lot of fun ideas I've found on different websites!  I wanted to do something different than Carson's nursery (obviously) but I love Carson's room so it was hard to think of something I would love just as much!  I decided to go with a color scheme of orange, gray, and navy blue.  Here is a little peek at what I'm envisioning.  Please be kind, this was my first time using Polyvore!

The orange is a little risky for me, but I think I'm going to love it!  I'm thinking I'll probably choose a soothing gray for the walls so that it can be easily transitioned into a big boy room in the future.  I'm working on a budget here so a lot of my finds are Target, Ikea, and Walmart.  I like the wall art in the collage (via Etsy) because it's cute and it's an easy way to bring in pops of orange.  Wall art is just so hard.  I know I want to incorporate Mason's name and/or initial in some way because I love Carson's name art in his nursery.

Let me know if you have any ideas of things I should add.  I need ideas for accents and I'm also on the lookout for an affordable blanket that would coordinate since I'm not buying a matching bedding set this time around.

How-To: Salt Dough Ornaments

Last year I made some personalized DIY glitter ornaments to add to our tree.  {Click the link to find a how-to post!}

This year I wanted to make something with Carson.  I knew I wanted to include his hand print because I know how much fun it will be to compare his hand size in the years to come!  I saw this Santa hand print ornament idea on Pinterest and thought it was adorable!  Here's how ours turned out and a quick tutorial!

What You Need:
1/2 cup salt
1/2 cup plain flour
1/4 cup water
rolling pin
knife
paint (I used acrylic)
sealer (I used Mod Podge)
paint brushes
cookie sheet
parchment paper
*Optional: cookie cutters

How to Make:
-Preheat your oven to 200 degrees.
-Combine salt, flour, and water in a mixing bowl and knead until combined.  Your mixture should be a dough-like consistency.
-Roll out your dough just like you would when making sugar cookies (yum)!  I rolled mine to be about 1/4" thick.
-Take your child's hand help them gently press into the dough to create a hand print.  Don't press too hard or you will go through the dough!
-Using a sharp knife, cut around the hand print.  Leave a small border.
-Place your cut-out on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper.
-Gather your dough scraps, roll it out again, and get as many hand prints as you can!  If you want, use a cookie cutter to make some other fun ornaments!
*This recipe made about 4 toddler-sized hand prints for me as well as one cookie cutter shape.

I also made one cookie cutter shape with some extra dough we had.  Carson used a foam brush to paint the tree and a Q-tip to add some ornaments!
After baking, before painting.

An 18 Month Journey...

Warning!  This post is about breastfeeding.  It can be a sensitive and sometimes controversial topic.  I am not against formula feeding Mommas.  I got formula as a baby and look how great I turned out! ;)  In all seriousness though, this is a post to document my journey.  Breast was best...for us!  I realize it is not best for everyone.  If you have something you want to talk about, feel free to comment or send me a private email!

During my pregnancy, I thought a lot about breastfeeding.  I knew it was something I wanted to try.  When I first got pregnant, I told people I was going to "at least try" to breastfeed.  I figured if it worked, great.  If not, no big deal!  As I progressed in my pregnancy and started researching, I started to change my viewpoint.  I decided I would do a little more than try.  I would try hard.  I read books.  I visited online forums.  I read information online.  I took breastfeeding classes.  I decided not to set a goal for myself.  Just like most people, I hate to fail.  I didn't want to set a goal and become devastated with myself when I didn't reach the goal.  I knew breastfeeding was hard and I had no idea if it was going to work for us.

Fast forward to May 18, 2012.  My nurses all knew that I was planning on breastfeeding and I wanted to have as much skin to skin time as possible (and right away).  They were great and as soon as my son was born, onto my chest he went:

My son rooted and tried to latch right away.  I was ecstatic!  Maybe this would be easier than I thought!  During my time in the hospital, breastfeeding was not easy.  After that initial latch, Carson didn't latch so easily.  He also wouldn't stay latched.  I cried.  I thought I was starving my son.  I didn't want to give into formula because it was too easy.  The hospital was very busy and it took a while to meet with a lactation consultant.  Luckily my nurses were all very helpful and knowledgeable and helped me try different positions.  My milk hadn't come in and all I remember is being told that Carson had lost weight.  I felt like a failure!

When we arrived home, my milk arrived as well.  (Whoa, huge boobs!)  I was hoping this would help solve the problem but we still had some issues.  I was getting engorged which was making it hard for my son to latch.  Eventually I figured out a method that worked for us and everything was smooth sailing!

Cluster feeding throughout the night = we're both tired!

Since everything was going so well, I decided I would try to set a small goal for myself.  I would try to breastfeed for at least 3 months.  Once I got to that 3 month mark, I would reevaluate.  Guess what?  We made it to 3 months!

Right around 3 months, I was getting ready to go back to work.  I was pumping a ton trying to build my precious freezer stash.  We even bought a separate deep freezer for my milk!  I felt like I was constantly nursing or pumping.  It was very tolling mentally and physically.  I was thankful that I had a good enough supply to nurse and build a stash at the same time.  Once I actually went back to work, things got a bit more stressful.  My job was very busy and only allowed me to pump once each day between the hours of 8-5.  The time I was allotted to pump was actually my 25 minute lunch break.  I ended up packing stuff that I could eat one-handed.  I would try to eat, pump, and check emails all in that 25 minutes.  Don't forget cleaning up the pump parts!  Oh, and my pumping room was my classroom.  You know, the one full of 27 first graders and their germs!  Every day I had to clean my pumping area, close all the blinds, lock my door, pump/eat/email, then clean my pump, put it away, clean my area, open the blinds, unlock the door and run to get my kids.  Needless to say I was STRESSED!  Because of the stress (and probably my awful diet), my supply tanked.  I was SO upset.  Work was not going to ruin this for me and my son!

Enter Fenugreek.  I heard about this through my Mommy group and it was a lifesaver.  I took 3 pills 3 times a day and basically smelled like I was sweating maple syrup.  It was gross.  BUT, it brought my supply back up!  (Chugging water 24/7 also helped me.)

When Carson was about 5 months I made the very difficult decision to take a leave of absence from my job and stay home with him.  It was definitely one of the hardest decisions I've had to make in my life but I am SO thankful I had the opportunity to have this time with him!  Once we got into a routine at home, my supply regulated itself and we mostly nursed.  I still had a big stash in the freezer in case my husband or one of the Grandmas wanted to give Carson a bottle.  Every once an a while I would still run into little issues here and there like random engorgement or a clogged duct.  Luckily my online support group was full of people going through the same things and it was a great place to get advice.

Carson was exclusively breastfed from the time he was born until he was 5.5 months old.  At 5.5 months we tried some rice cereal with him and he didn't like it.  We waited until 6 months to reevaluate and decided to try oatmeal.  He loved the oatmeal and a few weeks later we started [pureed] solids.  He continued with breastmilk until about 13 months when we started whole milk in straw sippies.  Once he started whole milk he continued to nurse about 4 times a day.  Eventually he weaned himself down to twice a day - mornings and evenings.  By the time he was 17 months he quit asking to nurse in the morning and would only nurse before bed.  (Not to sleep, just as part of our routine.)  I'm happy to say that he self weaned right before his 18 month birthday.  I'm glad I didn't have to take away something that he loved so much!

Here are some pics of my cheerful, healthy boy:

If you're a nursing mom and have any questions or need advice, feel free to shoot me an email and I'll try to help!  :)

If you're pregnant and planning on breastfeeding, make sure to have some resources before you start your nursing journey.  My hopsital had a breastfeeding group that met weekly with a lactaction consultant as well as a hotline you could call at any time!  KellyMom was basically my breastfeeding bible...I can't begin to describe the amount of great information you'll find over there!

Hand Print Turkey (a new variation!)

Last November I made a hand print turkey with Carson.  I loved the way it turned out but I knew it was going to be VERY hard to accomplish this year with an 18 month old toddler!  Anytime I paint his hands for a craft, he immediately makes a fist so he can squish the paint and feel the textures in his hand.

Such a tiny little hand print! <3
This is the alternative hand print turkey we did this year.  I think it's just as cute and Carson had a lot of fun making it with me.  It was also a great opportunity to practice his colors!

What You Need:
Washable paint (I used 5 colors)
Paintbrush or foam brush
White paper for base (I used cardstock)
Colored paper (brown, orange, red)
Googly eyes (or a black marker)
Glue

How to Make:

  1. I sketched a turkey body on my brown cardstock and cut it out first.  I lightly traced this body onto my white cardstock so I would know where to put Carson's hand prints.
  2. Using one color at a time (obviously!) paint your child's hand and create a print.  I went left to right with the prints because I wasn't sure if I would need 5 or 6.
  3. In between hand prints, thoroughly wipe your child's hand and clean your paint brush.  You can see where my colors got a bit mixed but I'm okay with that.
  4. Once your hand prints are done, let the paper dry.
  5. Finally, glue on your embellishments!  I glued my turkey body on first and then I added legs, beak, gobbler (is that what that flappy red thing is called?!), and eyes.

Note: If you're interested in trying the hand print turkey I did with Carson last year, find the complete instructions here!

My Favorite Lansinoh Goodies!

I was recently contacted by the lovely folks over at Lansinoh.  I was so excited when they asked if I would be interested in reviewing some of their products!  I loved Lansinoh products during my early days of breastfeeding.  Lansinoh's Breastmilk Storage Bags and Disposable Nursing Pads were just a few of my favorite things.  {To see more of my breastfeeding must-haves, check out my post from World Breastfeeding Week!}

Did you know that there are other brands in the Lansinoh family including mOmma and Earth Friendly Baby?  I had no idea these two amazing brands were part of the Lansinoh family!

Lansinoh was kind enough to send me some of the wonderful toddler feeding products by mOmma as well as some bath time goodies from the Earth Friendly Baby line AND some handy Lansinoh wipes!  It was like Christmas morning when the package was delivered - so many fun things to check out!

First let's start with the Skincare Products.  Lansinoh sent me Lansinoh Clean & Condition Wipes.  I love these wipes because they are so gentle (hypoallergenic!) on baby's skin.  They have a nice baby fresh scent that I love.  The wipes are nice and thick which means no tearing while cleaning up those yucky messes babies create!
"Check out these wipes!"

I was also fortunate enough to test out the Earth Friendly Baby Shampoo and Bodywash and Earth Friendly Baby Bubble Bath.  Both of these products come in a lovely, unique mandarin scent.  Did I mention they are totally certified ORGANIC?

Here is my opinion on the Earth Friendly Baby Shampoo and Bodywash and Earth Friendly Baby Bubble Bath:
  • Wonderful, clean scent.
  • Shampoo lathers up very nicely and rinses out easily.
  • Both products use are free from artificial coloring, synthetic fragrances, and parabens.
  • Ingredients are plant-derived.
  • Body wash seems very gentle!

Now onto the Meal Time goodies!  Lansinoh sent me the Straw Cup with Dual Handles, Mealtime Soft Spoon, and Fork.  All 3 products are BPA and Phthalate free!

The spoon and fork are so unique!  They are designed for babies 6months+ and have soft tips to be gentle on gums.  The unique rounded design encourages the utensils to turn upright when dropped which prevents contamination of the tip of the untensil!  You can also extend the handle by placing the travel cap over the sphere shaped handle.  Because Carson is 17 months, I think these utensils are a little too young for him.  The spoon works great, but the fork doesn't quite pierce the foods he is eating these days.  We also had an incident with the spoon while we were using the travel cap as an extended handle and he pulled it apart, splattering yogurt everywhere!  I will say though, I'm very excited to use these with Baby2 when we first are introducing solids, I think they will be perfect!  The travel cap is a real bonus for on-the-go families!

The straw cup is a very unique design.  It looks nothing like Carson's other sippies which made him very interested!  They also sell a design without handles.  Carson is always busy these days so I think the handles are helpful for when he only has one hand free to hold his drink!  This unique cup was voted "Product of the Year" in 2012 for the Toddler Mealtime category!  The straw folds into the lid when closed for protection when not in use.  One downside I see to this cup is that it has a lot of parts which makes for a more meticulous cleaning job!  However, I've found that most "leak-proof" sippies are the same way.  I'll take a few extra minutes cleaning the actual cup if I don't have to clean spilled milk everywhere from a leaky cup!  I also was a little bummed that the spherical shape made this cup hard to fit in the side pocket of my diaper bag as well as cupholders in the car seat and stroller.  It also has a slower flow on the straw so that took some getting used to on Carson's end.  (He is used to drinking from straws with faster flows.)  Otherwise, Carson really loves it!

Wondering why it was so slow coming out.  :)

Did you know the Lansinoh company was founded by a breastfeeding mom?  (So cool!)  Also, they have a blog!  Check it out: On Cloud Mom.

Note: I received these products from the Lansinoh company in exchange for my honest opinions and review.
